Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Test languages
Since June 1, 2026, all Texas CDL and CLP knowledge tests are in English only, and interpreters are not allowed. Before that, Spanish was also offered.
- Knowledge tests
Texas adds its own 'Texas Commercial Rules' knowledge test after General Knowledge; each test needs a score of 80% or higher.
- Learner permit (CLP)
A Texas CLP is valid for 180 days (or until your base license or lawful presence ends, if sooner). It can be renewed once, starting 30 days before it expires, and must be held at least 14 days before the skills test.
- Fees
CLP costs $25 (original or renewal). A new CDL for ages 18–84 costs $97 for 8 years, or $61 for 5 years with a hazmat endorsement.
- Also important
Skills tests can be taken through approved CDL Third Party Skills Testing (TPST) companies and schools, and the skills test has always been in English only.
State-only topics in the manual
- Section 14: Texas special requirements — papers and permits, flares/reflectors, hazard lights, and size and weight limits (14 ft height, 102 in width, 80,000 lb).
- Texas intro chapter: CLP rules, Third Party Skills Testing, required documents and the Texas fee table.
