- When making a normal stop in a vehicle with a manual transmission, when should you push in the clutch?
- As soon as you start braking
- When the engine rpm is down close to idle
- Before you touch the brake
- Never during a stop
When the engine rpm is down close to idleDo not push in the clutch until engine rpm is close to idle. When stopped, select a starting gear.
- Without ABS, if your steering wheels lock up during hard braking:
- The vehicle stops faster
- The trailer swings out
- You lose steering control
- The spring brakes come on
You lose steering controlWhen steering wheels lock, you lose steering control. Other wheels locking can cause skids, jackknifes or spins.
- How does ABS help you during hard braking?
- It senses coming lockup and reduces brake pressure to a safe level so you keep control
- It adds extra air pressure to all brakes
- It applies the spring brakes
- It shuts off the engine
It senses coming lockup and reduces brake pressure to a safe level so you keep controlThe ABS computer senses impending lockup, lowers pressure to a safe level, and you keep control and can steer.
- Only the tractor has ABS. While braking, you see the trailer begin to swing out. You should: ABS
- Brake harder
- Pull the trailer hand valve
- Turn sharply toward the trailer
- Let up on the brakes, if you can do so safely
Let up on the brakes, if you can do so safelyWith tractor-only ABS you keep steering, but watch the trailer and ease off the brakes (if safe) if it swings out.
- Only the trailer has ABS. What is true? ABS
- The tractor cannot jackknife
- The trailer is less likely to swing out, but if steering control is lost or the tractor starts to jackknife, ease off the brakes (if safe)
- You should always brake as hard as possible
- ABS on the trailer gives no benefit
The trailer is less likely to swing out, but if steering control is lost or the tractor starts to jackknife, ease off the brakes (if safe)Trailer-only ABS keeps the trailer from swinging out, but ease off the brakes if the tractor loses steering or starts to jackknife.
- You drive a tractor-trailer that has ABS. How should you brake?
- Pump the brakes rapidly
- Always slam the brakes fully
- Brake as you always have, using only the force needed to stop safely and stay in control
- Use only the trailer hand valve
Brake as you always have, using only the force needed to stop safely and stay in controlWith ABS, brake as you always have: only the force needed, the same way whatever unit has ABS, and back off if needed.
- When is it acceptable to fully apply the brakes in an emergency stop?
- When you always drive a straight truck or combination that has working ABS on every axle
- When only the tractor has ABS
- When the road is icy and there is no ABS
- Whenever the ABS lamp is on
When you always drive a straight truck or combination that has working ABS on every axleThe one exception: with working ABS on all axles, you can fully apply the brakes in an emergency stop.
- True or False: If your ABS is not working, you still have normal brake functions.
- True
- False
TrueTrue. Without ABS you still have regular brakes. Drive normally and get the system serviced soon.

- Applying the brakes fully, releasing when wheels lock, and re-applying
- Using only the parking brake
- Pumping the brakes quickly
- Applying the brakes as hard as you can without locking the wheels, with very small steering movements
Applying the brakes as hard as you can without locking the wheels, with very small steering movementsControlled braking: as hard as possible without lockup, small steering moves; release if wheels lock or you must steer more.
- With controlled braking, what should you do if the wheels lock or you need to make a larger steering adjustment?
- Brake harder

- Your truck has ABS on only one axle. Compared with no ABS at all, what is true?
- It gives no benefit unless every axle has ABS
- It lets you brake as hard as you want in any emergency
- It still gives you more control while braking
- It makes the regular brakes stop working
It still gives you more control while brakingEven partial ABS (tractor only, trailer only, or a single axle) still gives you more control during braking. Keep braking normally.
